It is used for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation and for the prevention and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (a brain disorder caused by liver dysfunction). Lactitol works as an osmotic laxative by drawing water into the colon, softening stools, and promoting bowel movements. It is not absorbed
