Here you can see the men in the three small whaleboats rowing for open water to escape being crushed by the shifting floes of ice. The starry night is shown reflected in the calm ocean water. The backdrop of the Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition came down to three expedition leaders, Robert Falcon Scott, Roald Amundsen, and Ernest Shackleton, who all tried to become the first man to stand at the South Pole.
